Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness that affects perception, thinking, emotions and behavior. Over a lifetime, about 1 in 100 people will develop schizophrenia. It is most likely to start between the ages of 15 and 35 years, but can sometimes occur in younger children. In females, it can have its onset in middle age while in males it can arise at later ages too. Symptoms include delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, trouble with thinking, and lack of motivation. Risk of violence or self-harm or lack of adequate self-care might warrant supervised admission.
Medications called ‘antipsychotics’ are an important part of the treatment of schizophrenia. They treat the symptoms of the illness. Hallucinations and delusions may take weeks and sometimes months to improve. Schizophrenia can re-occur, and may need long-term treatment. Behavior therapies, cognitive therapies (after stabilization of symptoms) and social-vocational rehabilitation offers good results if started along with medications.
Family interventions addressing caregiver distress is also recommended. Awareness about rights of the patients like disability certification, monitory benefits, free legal aid etc (according to the provisions of government) is also stressed upon in the treatment.
