Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder – in which people have recurring, unwanted thoughts, ideas or sensations (obsessions) that make them feel driven to do something repetitively (compulsions). The repetitive behaviours, such as hand washing, checking on things or cleaning, can significantly interfere with a person’s daily activities and social interactions. OCD is more common among people who have a family member who has the disorder. People with an immediate relative (parent or sibling) with OCD are two to five times more likely to experience OCD than someone without a close relative with OCD. A diagnosis of OCD requires the presence of obsessions and/or compulsions that are time-consuming (more than one hour a day), cause significant distress, and impair work or social functioning. Repetitive thoughts ,Suicidal ideations or hopelessness feeling or lack of adequate self care might warrant urgent supervised admission. Treatment – includes psychotherapy, medications like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors , neuromodulation therapy, iv ketamine , relaxation techniques and transcranial magnetic stimulation.
